KOSOVO POLJE

The Battle of Kosovo (1389) marked the beginning of Ottoman domination of the Balkans, and would retain an important significance in the region for centuries afterwards.

The nascent Ottoman Empire won its first territory in Europe when its forces occupied a fortress on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1352. With the Byzantine Empire in steep decline, the Ottomans had conquered the city of Adrianople (now Edirne) by 1369, opening the way for further expansion into the Balkans. By this time, the Balkans were populated by the Slavs, an Indo-European people who had settled the region over the sixth and seventh century. They had established several states, and converted to Christianity, but the lack of a strong central power left them vulnerable to the Ottomans.
